All-on-4® treatment concept

Dental Implant Options

The All-on-4® treatment concept procedure is a process that has revolutionized the way surgeons and dentists think of replacing a full set of teeth. The vast majority of people who wear or who have worn dentures will attest to the problems that come with them. Dentures are often painful, inconvenient and unstable. They can make chewing foods extremely difficult, limiting the foods that you once enjoyed.  There is also nothing more humiliating than having a denture unseat and fall out of your mouth when eating at a restaurant with friends! the sad reality is that as time passes, the jaw bone dissolves away due to the lack of teeth and the pressure that the denture places onto the jaw bone; this will eventually lead to the denture no longer fitting and may progress to the point that a  denture will not stay in place no matter how much adhesive is used.

While All-on-4® treatment concept can be completed for patients that are already wearing dentures and are unhappy with their fit, many patients who opt for an All-on-4® treatment concept are patients who still  have all or some of their teeth and having been fighting in desperation to avoid having to wear a denture. These people are termed “terminally dentate”, meaning it’s not a question of whether they’re going to lose their teeth, it’s a matter of when. This tooth loss can be the result of trauma, decay, medication, gum disease and bone loss, eating disorders or a number of other issues. Regardless of the cause, the prospect of losing their remaining teeth can be devastating to a patient!

All-on-4® treatment concept replaces your missing teeth within the upper or lower jaw with a full set of teeth supported by only four dental implants. Compared to outdated concepts that required 6-8 implants, with less implants needed, the overall treatment time and cost is reduced. With over 15 years of use of this specific technique, All-on-4® is well documented and has a success rate that is comparable to, or higher than, all other treatment options for a fixed, implant supported, implant retained prosthesis. The Bar Attachment Denture solution also ensures greater stability in the bone, eliminating additional bone loss and reducing the need for bone graft surgery to increase bone volume.

Typically, a temporary set of teeth is placed on the same day of surgery. Patients are routinely surprised by how little discomfort occurs after the procedure. The temporary teeth allow you to lead a normal life immediately after surgery. After a short healing period, your dentist, working with an experienced dental lab, will fabricate and place the final bridge. Your quality of life is improved, your smile restored, and you can start enjoying your favorite foods again with renewed confidence.

All-on-4® treatment concept offers you many advantages.

  • A cost effective solution. Your new replacement teeth require only 4 implants for each jaw. With fewer implants required, the cost is lowered.
  • Reduced need for bone grafting. The special tilting of two of the implants ensures a secure and stable anchorage for the replaced arch, typically making bone grafting unnecessary.
  • Faster treatment and healing time. Your replacement arch can be attached to your implants immediately after insertion.
  • Scientifically proven and documented. All-on-4® treatment concept is supported by good clinical outcomes from studies over a decade with favorable results.

zygoma-implantAs a patient wears dentures, the pressure that the denture places upon the jawbone leads to progressive bone loss. Overtime, this can lead to such severe bone loss that a denture will no longer fit, no matter how well it’s made, or how much adhesive is used. In these situations where bone loss in the upper jaw becomes so severe, it is not uncommon that traditional implants will no longer be an option. This can leave patients feeling hopeless, especially after being told by their dentist, or dental specialists, that they are not a candidate for implants. The zygoma implants were designed and developed by Nobel Biocare specifically for these case. They are designed specifically for the upper jaw (maxilla) that has experienced severe bone loss and they make use of the cheek bone (zygoma) that sites above the upper jaw. These implants can be incorporated into an Bar Attachment Denture type fixed prosthesis and allow those patients with even the most extreme cases of bone loss to be restored with a new smile and teeth that are fixed in place and allow for a return to the foods that you love! Like the traditional Bar Attachment Denture procedure, zygoma implant placement is a procedure that can be completed in the office setting with intravenous sedation. In most cases, these patients will leave their surgical appointment with a set of fixed teeth that attach to the zygoma implants. Like traditional implants, the zygoma implants are allowed to heal for a period of three to six months before your dentist will make the final set of teeth.
